The Hampden-Sydney golf team has roared into the month of October, putting up strong showings at two competitions. With four competitions this month, the golfers have begun to settle into the flow of the season. With all the competitions within 15 days, the team was under pressure to get off on the right foot, and they delivered.
On October 13th, the Tigers competed in the Virginia State Intercollegiate Tournament. The event, hosted by Shenandoah University, was scheduled for 36 holes over two days, but was cut to one round after rain interfered.
Hampden-Sydney was able to bring home first place team honors. Junior Brian Burt earned medalist honors by shooting a 68, putting him four under par. The Tigers also had two other golfers in the top ten. Sophomore Trey Cully was able to finish fourth by shooting for par, while junior Drew Arnold posted a score of one over par to finish ninth. Junior George Whiting shot two over par for a 12th place finish, while senior Rick O’Connell posted a score of six over par, placing him in a tie for 26th.
Hampden-Sydney shot one under par as a team. The team finished eleven strokes ahead of their next competitor, with Bridgewater and Washington & Lee tying for second.
On October 20th, the Tigers traveled to Ashland to compete in Ted Keller Invitational. The team brought home their second straight win, finishing 30 strokes ahead of second place finisher Greensboro College.
Rick O’Connell earned medalist honors by shooting three under par, posting scores of 69 and 68 on the 70-par course. Two more Tigers finished in the top five, with juniors Brian Burt and George Whiting each shot five over par to tie for fifth place. Fellow juniors Drew Arnold and Trey Cully also posted strong results, with Arnold placing 12th with a score of 12 over par, and Cully finishing 20th with scores of 79 and 75.
The fall season will conclude for Hampden-Sydney golf at the O’Briant–Jensen Memorial on October 28th and 29th. The competition will be hosted by the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
