The long season rolls on for Hampden-Sydney Cross Country. The latest competition for the Tigers was the Maroon Invitational, hosted by Roanoke College on September 21st. The contest featured a six-team field including Roanoke, Southern Virginia, Bluefield, Bluefield State, Ferrum, and our Tigers.

The Maroon Invitational will go into the books as a successful effort from Hampden-Sydney, as the Tigers took second place in team honors. Freshman Grant Brown led the way for H-SC, placing sixth overall with a time of 29:59. Senior Andrew Stoddard was not far behind, as his final campaign continued with a 12th place finish and a time of 30:55. Freshman Andrew Madison completed the course in 32:08, good enough to place 17th in the field. Sophomore William Imeson finished 19th with a time of 32:27. Freshman Taylor Matthews also contributed to the Tiger scoring by placing 21st with a time of 32:48.

Overall, it was a solid day for Coach Leonard’s squad at the Maroon Invitational. Team mainstays Andrew Stoddard and William Imeson continued to lead the team with solid performances. However, this was also a day for youth to be served, with three freshmen contributing to the scoring for Hampden-Sydney. Grant Brown continued his breakout season, while fellow freshmen Andrew Madison and Taylor Matthews also took large strides forward.

On October 5th, the Tigers will host the annual Family Weekend 5K/1K for the surrounding community. The next competition for the team will take place on October 19th, when the Tigers travel to Newport News for the Christopher Newport Invitational.
